Sports fans show faith in their team in different ways.
Some have season tickets. Some buy jerseys. Some watch every game on television. And some place bets on their team to win the championship, including some before a game has been played, or at a team’s lowest point in the season.
Say hello to some of the Stars’ strongest believers.
Before the Stars roared through the postseason and into the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in 20 years, the team opened the season 1-7-1 as their championship aspirations were called into doubt in the first month of the season. That just provided some fans better odds on the Stars to win the Stanley Cup.
In a number of messages on social media, many fans — some wished to remain anonymous — explained the odds they got while betting on the Stars back in October or November. All of the bets in those two months relayed to The Dallas Morning News were minor, ranging from between $1 and $50, and with odds from +1500 to +2800. (In betting, +1000 means someone would win $1,000 on a $100 bet.)
Plenty of them said that the slow start was to be expected because of the offseason additions and tough schedule to open the season, and that they were just waiting for Corey Perry and Joe Pavelski to jell with the Stars.
There were also bets before the season began that have stood for a year — or more — and are four Dallas wins away from cashing out.
Kristin Castillo and David Diaz got married in Las Vegas last July and placed a $40 bet at +1500 on their wedding day on the Stars to win the 2020 Stanley Cup. The couple is expecting their first child in October and hope the newborn can join in a possible Cup celebration.
“I grew up watching the Stars with my dad, and it was my first time of age in Vegas, so it just felt like something I had to do,” Castillo said in a message. “I also have a Dallas Stars tattoo on my arm to commemorate what they mean to me and my family. It feels like we have been waiting for them to win again since the last time.
“My dad took us out of school the last time to go take a pic with the Stanley Cup. I’ve also had a pic on my background of my phone of [Mike] Modano with the Cup and said I would not change it till it happened.”
Nick Moroch, the Stars fan who sits behind the net at American Airlines Center with the #Bang sign, made his annual bet on the Stars winning a championship (at +1600), something he’s done for the last 10 years.
Sean Lester decided in August to place $10 on the Stars to win the Cup (+1375), based of playoff predictions by hockey analyst Micah Black McCurdy, who runs the Hockey Viz advanced stats website.
“His models have always shown the Stars in the last season or two to be a stronger team than the results were showing,” Lester said in a message. “So I figured if his analytical deep dive had any value in predicting the Stars as a Cup contender, and those odds were so high, why not put a little money on it?”
He wasn’t the only one who thought that.
